The most costly oil platform accident

On 06 July 1988, 167 men died as a result of the explosions and fire on board the Piper Alpha Platform, Occidental Petroleum Ltd. and Texaco in the North Sea. 62 men survived, mostly by jumping into the sea from the high decks of the platform.

Piper Alpha was located on the Piper Oilfield, about 190 kilometres from Aberdeen in 144 metres of water. There were about 240 people working on the platform during the incident. The lost was estimated $1,270,000,000
